Genevieve in Edinburgh - Like Blood From A Cheap Cigar
Exciting news! My actress, stand-up-comic, playwright daughter Genevieve’s two act play has been accepted by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for twenty-two performances during the month of August. Its kind of amazing as it is one of the largest and most prestigious arts festivals in the world, where many artists and works of art have break-out career boosts. Performances go on all day and night in venues all over the city.

As a special bonus, Gen was contacted by one of the best theaters in Edinburgh. They had seen the video and incredible reviews of her show’s run in L.A. and offered her the coveted 8PM time slot for all 22 performances of her show, to secure it for the most important evening spot. Yes that is actually the title up there! “Like Blood From A Cheap Cigar!” My little girl who went to Greenwich Country Day thought of that, Go figure! Not to mention some of the best dialogue I’ve seen.
The punch line is that Gen and her partner in drama Joe, are waging a Kickstarter campaign to get them to and through the festival. It is their quest to give Gen’s play the chance to be seen by people from all over the world ,who go to the festival to see cutting edge entertainment. When I saw it I was shocked by its raw depiction of an event that happened one night, in an on and off relationship she was in with a guy for several years.
If it so moves you, the link below shows some clips plus Gen and Joe’s pitch. As the Dad, I would of course appreciate any level of support you feel comfortable with. She has toiled away at her craft for the past 10 years and its a father’s pleasure to see his child make such progress.

WHAT I LIKED
The intimacy that was created by the commitment of the actors and the intelligence of the script and the direction.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
That there wasn’t more.
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
An incredibly nuanced and personal glimpse inside an intense, damaged, ‘with or without you’ relationship, “Like Blood From a Cheap Cigar” fires on all cylinders from beginning to end.
The connection and commitment between Genevieve Joy and Joseph Reitman is palpable and astounding. Because of this, the story that unfolds feels more like a backstage pass into the bedroom of real people that you really know than it does a scripted play on a stage in a theatre.
Kimberly Browning’s smart and effortless direction allows the strength of Ms. Joy’s (incredible) script to come to life in an extremely visceral way.
While its billed as a comedy (and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments), this play is much, much more. Goosebumps is the only thing I can say about when we leave these two.
Extremely thought provoking and moving. Do yourself a favor and catch the last show on Friday!
