Went to see Cagney tonight. Thank God I did. I’ve been meaning to go for months, and now it’s closing in a week. Well what a revelation! The story, the music, the performances! Every member of the cast was stellar. Wow! Clearly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Way up on the list!
Plus the direction was tremendous. But topping it all off was the incredible performance of Robert (Bobby) Creighton, who played the title character and was also largely responsible for the book and music, a theatrical juggernaut unto himself. And luckily for me the forces of serendipity were on full display. Though I was not familiar with Bobby, I sat with friends from his home town in Canada, and got the story.
Then I met the producer and a cadre of other close friends, which led to a nice moment with Bobby himself. The show runs for another week, but he is only doing the Sunday matinee and Tuesday evening performances. The understudy will close it out. As for Bobby, he has already been cast as the Duke of Weselton, in the upcoming Disney, Broadway production of Frozen. Lucky for Disney!
